Skilled Visa

There is a great shortage of some skills in Australia. This Migration Program represents a significant Government initiative to overcome skill shortages in Australia and to bring to our shores skilled men and women whose business, technical, trade or professional skills will expand those available in Australia and contribute to Australia’s economic growth. Australia’s economy is among the healthiest in the world.

Unemployment at 5.6% in May 2004 is low and was at that date the lowest in two years. Statistics published in July 2004 showed that, for example, that people born in Greece, Germany and Italy have unemployment rates of 2.0%, 2.4% and 2.9% respectively.

There are thousands of advertised jobs each week in all States and the Commonwealth Department of Employment and Workplace Relations produces the Skilled Vacancies Index for 18 skilled occupational groups for each Australian State.

There is currently a very great demand for some skills as shown by the Government’s publication of the Migration on Demand List.

* Important: If you nominate one of the above specialist computing occupations, you will only be awarded MODL points if your skills assessment from the relevant Australian assessing body – the Australian Computer Society (ACS) states you have met the criteria to be recognised in one of the above specialisations.

Skills assessments provided to successful applicants will state:

  • the ASCO Code for Computer Professional not elswhere classified (nec) with the specialisation stated in brackets - for example, 2231-79 (SAP)
    and
  • the statement: "Based on the provided certified documentation, it is my opinion that the applicant has 12 months experience in (name of specialisation, for example, SAP)".

Note: If you have a skills assessment which only states the ASCO Code for "Computer Professional nec 2231-79", you are not eligible to be awarded MODL points. A new assessment with the above information will be required if you wish to claim MODL points.

How often does the MODL change?

The MODL is reviewed twice a year to take into consideration existing and emerging skills shortages. This does not mean the list is changed twice a year. Changes only occur if there has been a significant change in labour market trends.

As the MODL may change from time to time, you are advised to check the current MODL at the time you are lodging your visa application.

Priority processing

If your nominated occupation is on the MODL, your General Skilled Migration visa application will receive priority processing.
